Discerning of Spirits

Discernment is the ability to obtain sharp precepts or to judge well (the activity of something).  In the case of judgment discerment can be psychological or moral in nature.  Within judgment, discernment involves going past the mere perception of something and making nuanced judgments about it's properties or qualities.  Considered as a virtue a discerning individual is considered to possess wisdom, and be of good judgment: especially so with regard to subject matter often over looked by others.

A Superatural Ability
To discern spirits is a supernatural ability enabled by God's Holy Spirit that allows a person to determine the source of a spiritual manifestation, whether it emanates from God, the devil, the world or man.   When one is gifted in this way, God will reveal information about the presence or absence of spiritual entities.  Usually, this gift is regarded as useful to detect evil spiritual  forces or influences.  But it will also detect the presence or absence of angelic intervention or prompts of God's Holy Spirit working within us.

Esample: Daniel used this gift supernaturally when he saw the warfare in the heavenlies, between Michael the Arc Angel and Satan himself - not one of Santan's cohorts as he took 1/3 of the angels with him when he fell from heaven, but specifically noted this was Satan himself.  He also specifically named the angel of God as "Michael the arc angel."  Clearly, this was a supernatural eye to see into the spiritual realm and to know what specifically was happening. 

When supernaturally discerning the spirit, and this can be Satan's realm and spirits, the human spirit, God's Angels and specifically his Waring Angels as named in the Book of Daniel when Michael the Arch angel was waring again Satan. 

We learn from Ez. 44:23-34 that to discern spirits enables one to make distinctions between the holy and profane as well as clean and unclean.

In Contrast:  To discern from a wise place of discernment, the discerner if it be a christrian believer, will make decisions according to biblical judgments, based on knowing the commandments, and if people should violate them, what the appropriate punishment should be.  Wisdom is in the mix, but sometimes it's the wisdom of man in the mix and other times the supernatural gift of wisdom mentioned in 1Cor. 14.  When one is gifted with supernatural discerning of spirits, usually the supernatural Gift of Wisdom is involved as well, knowing what to do with this information such as withhold it for a time, to deliver it and to know who the information should be told to.  God will not give such holy set-
